Detour
Due To I-40 Rockslide
(October 25, 2009)
| On October 25, 2009
a rockslide on Interstate 40 forced officials to shut down the road in
both directions in North Carolina near the North Carolina-Tennessee State
Line. The North Carolina Dept Of Transportation estimates the slide could take months to clean up. If you are traveling from the west on I 40 to Pigeon Forge, Wears Valley, or Gatlinburg, this rockslide should not affect you. However, If you are traveling to Tennessee on I 40 through North Carolina, you will need to plan for a detour due to this rockslide. You can detour on the north side by using US 25/70 between Newport and Asheville or also by using I 81 between I 40 and Kingsport and I 26 between Kingsport and Asheville then back on I 40 at Asheville. You can also detour on the south side by taking US 441 across the Smoky Mountains to Cherokee, and then US 23 back to I 40 near Waynesville, North Carolina. Either route will provide you with a beautiful scenic drive and great mountain views. You will need to plan a little extra time in your schedule.
